It seems that Lionel Messi will soon fulfil one of his dreams: to play in the Newell’s Old Boys shirt. This was hinted at by Maxi Rodriguez when he announced that he is thinking of inviting the PSG player to his retirement match.
Maxi is an idol at Newell’s and had an extensive career with the Argentina national team, being part of the squad that reached the final of the 2014 World Cup. He has a long friendship with Messi and invited him to his last match.
The send-off will take place on June 24, Maxi Rodriguez‘s birthday, at the Estadio Coloso Del Parque Marcelo Bielsa, which the player considers an extension of his home.
“This is the best ground there is for me. Maybe I don’t like to be the center of the show, but we have to have a nice party for the fans, for the national team. Let’s hope it will be an unforgettable day. I had the chance to do it somewhere else, but I have to do it at home with the two shirts that I love: Newell’s and the Argentine national team,” Rodriguez said at a press conference.
When asked about the presence of the Argentine captain, the former Liverpool midfielder was coy.
“Messi is invited, that’s for sure. We want him to be here, but he will decide when the match approaches. When the ‘The Best awards’ took place, I told Messi a bit about it, but I prefer to be cautious with all the intimate talks. Leo, as well as everyone else we can imagine, will try to be here.”
