The USMNT visited the city of St. Louis on Saturday for a friendly match against Uzbekistan as part of their preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America and to kick off Gregg Berhalter‘s second era at the helm.
Team USA managed to beat Uzbekistan 3-0, but the opponents surprisingly played well, despite the scoreboard does not reflecting as such. The difference was that the home side were as aggressive as usual and managed to score at the start of the match.
USMNT took the lead four minutes into the match through a Tim Weah goal. Uzbekistan stayed close until the final stretch when Ricardo Pepi and Christian Pulisic each found the back of the net.
Pepi, 20, made it 2-0 at 90’+1′ after a great shot by Brenden Aaronson was deflected by the goalkeeper inside the area and left it in play for an easy goal from the PSV striker.
Pulisic, 24, scored a penalty kick three minutes later to seal the exhibition victory. The USMNT have a ticket to the upcoming World Cup as one of the three host nations and don’t have to play WC Qualifiers.
Luca De La Torre suffers injury
Luca De La Torre suffered an injury and will likely not be available for the team’s Tuesday friendly against Oman.
Tyler Adams or Johnny Cardoso will likely replace De La Torre. Yunus Musah and Weston McKennie, both of whom played all 90 minutes, are also probable to miss the next friendly.
Ben Cremaschi and Malik Tillman, meanwhile, might receive more minutes Tuesday, considering they barely played Saturday.
Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner saved a couple of shots from Cagliari striker Eldor Shomurodov that would have changed the game.
