CD Guadalajara, aka Chivas, has indefinitely suspended three of its players: stars Alexis Vega, Cristin ‘Chicote’ Caldern and academy product Ral Martnez. To make things even more shocking, it was team owner Amaury Vergara who made the decision without the consent of head coach Veljko Paunovic.
Chaos has struck Liga MX, as its all-time most winning team has dealt Mexican soccer its biggest scandal in years. Chivas currently stands 7th in the Liga MX 2023 Apertura standings, but the internal commotion goes beyond their (so far) mediocre season.
Why have the Chivas players been suspended from team?
On October 3rd, the team formally announced the “separation with immediate effect” of the three players due to breaching internal protocols. The club from Guadalajara didn’t specify which rules were broken, but it was soon revealed by Azteca Deportes that it was due to the players bringing women to the team’s hotel after Monday’s 1-1 tie against Toluca.
Allegedly, the termination of all three players’ contracts is looming. Though the drastic move may wait till the ‘Clsico Tapato’ derby of Chivas vs Atlas. It’s also yet to be revealed how Paunovic feels about the decision made by the owner, especially when it concerns winger Alexis Vega, who has 27 caps for the Mexican National Team.
To make matters worse, the players have refused to publicly apologize. With the wives of Vegas and Caldern defending them through social media posts, even blasting the decision made by the team as “hypocritical”.
This year, more than ever, all eyes will be on the Chivas vs Atlas matchup and, especially, the likely fallout that will come afterwards.
