These are not good times for the captains of Barcelona. They have been in the firing line for some time now because of the financial burden they pose for the club.
Gerard Pique, tired of this pressure, announced that he was leaving Barcelona just a week ago, while Sergi Roberto signed a very low renewal for this season.
The situation escalated when president Joan Laporta hinted at the Members’ Assembly that the captains had not wanted to lower their salaries, although he stressed that it was their right.
From that moment on, there were reactions from the stands and Sergio Busquets was not spared from all this fuss either. The captain’s situation is different because his contract expires next June and he is a regular starter in Xavi’s team.
However, a couple of games with errors were enough for him to hear some whistles from the stands.
Xavi is counting on him
It was a reaction that hurt the player. Busquets’ commitment to the club has always been very strong, which is why, given the turn of events, he seriously considered the possibility of leaving the club in January.
The captain asked the club if this was the solution to the problems, but there was no chance of that happening. For Xavi, Busquets’ presence in the team at the moment is unquestionable.
The defensive midfield position is the only one that the coach does not have much depth in.
He only has Busquets, although he can look for solutions such as Frenkie de Jong, who has already played in that position in some games, although Xavi sees the Dutchman in a more advanced spot.
Franck Kessie can also play in that position. However, Busquets is still indispensible for the coach at the moment, so he did not even want to hear about the possibility of him leaving in January.
The summer is a different matter. Busquets’ plan is to finish his contract with Barcelona and then play a couple of years in another league. The MLS is the most tempting at the moment for the captain.
Zubimendi and Ruben Neves
The club are not keen for him to continue when his contract expires in June and at the moment they have no intention of offering him a renewal as they cannot afford to pay him the amount of money he is currently on, or anything close to it. Moreover, they have been scouring the market for a possible replacement. Zubimendi and Ruben Neves are the priority options they are considering, although neither are cheap. Chelsea’s Jorginho, whose contract is up in the summer, could be a low cost option.
