Monterrey lost 0-1 against Pachuca in the second leg of the 2022 Liga MX Apertura semi-final series on Sunday, falling 6-2 in the global score to be eliminated from playoff contention.
Rayados needed three goals in the second match to tie the score, and advance to the final but failed to find the back of the net at all. Instead, a last minute penalty by Aviles Hurtado saw the visiting side win the game and triumph over Rayados once again to secure their ticket to the championship series.
Head coach Victor Manuel Vucetich reflected on the loss after the match, labeling their semi-final performance a ‘failure’.
“In the first game, it’s evident , we made mistakes that we didn’t make, it happened to us in a game, different circumstances, maybe decisions that affected us, I think that intervenes so that today the scoreboard is bulky, within the need we seek to be aggressive, to be more forceful,” he said.
“We had three or four very good options but we did not have that fortune. In addition, he did not run away from the responsibility he had and could not fulfill, being champion. it is a failure, if you have that commitment.”
Monterrey entered the series as favorites, after having concluded the regular season in second place with 35 points in 17 games and a record of 10W-2L-5D. But the pressure proved too much for Vucetich’s side, conceding two penalties and four goals.
The team now heads into the offseason, with months to prepare before the 2023 Liga MX Clausura kicks off on January 6.
