Barcelona were once again knocked out of Europe on an embarrassing night for the club. The Europa League elimination against Eintracht Frankfurt who are ninth in the Bundesliga is yet another chapter in Barcelona’s sad history in Europe in recent years.
The failures in Turin, Rome, Liverpool, Paris and Lisbon add to this season’s double elimination in the Champions League and Europa League.
Barcelona had dominated Europe from 2006 to 2015, winning four Champions League titles but the last seven years have shown a change in trend.
In 2016 they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid after losing 2-0 at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, although that exit was more acceptable in comparison to the ones that would follow.
2017: The 3-0 loss to Juventus
The 2016/17 season saw the start of Barcelona’s worst European nights. Despite the heroic 6-1 win over PSG to record a historic comeback after the 4-0 defeat in Paris, they failed to learn their lesson as Juventus went on to humiliate the Blaugrana 3-0 in Turin.
2018: Roma and another 3-0 defeat
Nobody could have imagined after the 4-1 win at the Camp Nou that Barcelona would not make it into the Champions League semi-finals against Roma.
But a 3-0 defeat in Rome capped off by a Kostas Manolas header condemned Barcelona to an unthinkable exit.
2019: 4-0 at Anfield
If the Roma elimination was humiliating, something worse happened a year later, as Barcelona saw their 3-0 win at the Camp Nou count for nothing as Liverpool trounced the Catalans 4-0 at Anfield.
2020: 8-2 against Bayern Munich
In an atypical Champions League due to the pandemic, Lisbon witnessed the most painful elimination in Barcelona’s history with an 8-2 quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.
2021: Defeat to PSG
With a stellar Kylian Mbappe, PSG beat Barcelona 4-1 at the Camp Nou in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The 1-1 draw in the second leg was Leo Messi’s last game as a Barcelona player in Europe.
2022: Double elimination
This edition of the Champions League will go down in history as the first in 21 years in which Barcelona did not advance past the group stage.
Bayern defeated them 3-0 in the last group game before Eintracht Frankfurt knocked them out in the quarter finals of the Europa League.
