The United States’ poor performance in recent friendlies took a toll on the national team. The 2-0 defeat against Japan and the 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia meant they dropped three positions in the FIFA ranking.
These are the last rankings that are to be published by FIFA before the World Cup in Qatar and the form of the US going into the tournament is not good at all.
Fall in the rankings
For the first time since 2020, the United States dropped out of the world’s top 15. On that occasion, it dropped to 20th in the world. After a period of improvement, the US have once again slipped.
Although many teams don’t care about the rankings, losing places just before a World Cup is not a good sign.
The United States are in Group B of the World Cup. Their opponents, too, have little change in the rankings. England, the favourites to finish first, remain in fifth place. Wales are ranked 19th and Iran remain in 20th place.
Brazil remain first
The Brazilian team remain in first place and will go into the World Cup as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
They are followed by Belgium, who have been at the top for years. It is perhaps the last time for the Red Devils to win something with their ‘golden generation’.
The podium is completed by Lionel Messi’s Argentina. The Albiceleste are unbeaten in 35 matches and with a Copa America and the Finalissima under their belt, the South Americans are also among the favourites to win their third World Cup.
