Arsenal began their Europa League campaign by defeating FC Zurich 2-1, with Eddie Nketiah‘s second half goal proving the difference.
The Gunners dominated for long stretches of the opening frame, with Mikel Arteta‘s side then getting the scoring up and running after 17 minutes.
Fabio Vieira‘s clever ball sent Nketiah down the left, and the forward’s low pass found Marquinhos in stride. The 19-year-old then side-footed his effort into the far corner for a debut goal.
Against the run of play, though, FC Zurich managed to level proceedings just before the close of the half.
Arsenal struggled to clear their lines, with Nketiah‘s attempted clearance sending Fidan Aliti tumbling in the penalty area. After VAR confirmed the decision, Mirlind Kryeziu stepped up and sent debutant Matt Turner the wrong way to level the match.
Despite the temporary setback, Arsenal managed to restore their advantage after 62 minutes. Marquinhos fired a teasing left-footed cross from the right flank, which allowed Nketiah to separate himself from his marker and head home what proved to be the winner.
