Journalist Ryan Taylor has shared an Aston Villa transfer update concerning one target for Steven Gerrard.
What’s the word?
Taylor was referring to Jan Bednarek as he spoke with GIVEMESPORT, saying: “I do believe there’s legs to that one because the guy who reported it is very reliable in terms of Polish transfer news.
“He had a few stories in January on Matty Cash to Atletico Madrid, and it turned out to be true.”
It was Polish journalist Tomasz Włodarczyk who stated that Bednarek was “getting closer” to Villa, and with Taylor also giving his backing to the move, it could happen sooner rather than later.
Big news for Gerrard
One win and two defeats from three isn’t good enough, especially when the losses were against two teams in Bournemouth and Crystal Palace who would’ve been perceived as beatable, while even their sole victory ended in disaster as Diego Carlos was stretchered off injured against Everton.
It was revealed that the summer signing will miss the rest of this year and possibly the start of 2023 in what is a massive blow to Gerrard, but the news surrounding Bednarek might give the 42-year-old a big lift.
Should Aston Villa sign Bednarek?
He averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.81 last season, more than any Villa centre-back managed, while his average of 2.9 successful headers per game would rank him joint-first among Gerrard’s squad from 2021/22 alongside Kortney Hause, who only played seven matches.
It seems most likely that Villa will bring a centre-back in over the next few days to cover for the injury to Carlos, with names such as Attila Szalai and Abdou Diallo being touted with a move to the Midlands, and the manager should be pushing a deal through for Bednarek as quickly as possible.
The 26-year-old is arguably in the prime of his career, and with the World Cup fast approaching, he will be keen to impress at club level in order to strengthen his chances of featuring for Poland at the finals.
