Brittney Griner has been found guilty of smuggling drugs in Russia and sentences to nine years in prison, in addition to the six months she has already spent in Moscow custody.
The reaction back in the United States has been one of shock and disappointment, with a number of NBA stars criticising the sentence handed down to Griner, as well as the US response to trying to set her free.
Steph Curry is the latest to chip in with his view on the matter, soon after LeBron James had done the same.
“It’s beyond the sports world at this point, but myself and all of [Griner’s] colleagues have spoken very loudly,” Curry explained in an interview with Blavity.
“We need to continue to keep her name in the media and make sure she feels loved and supported.
“Unfortunately it’s such a helpless situation when you think about all the details of what’s happened, today is not a great day, the right people are feeling the pressure and I’m hoping that it works out for BG.”
