Rangers can axe Kamara in Winks swoop

Glasgow Rangers have enjoyed a busy summer transfer window as a number of players have moved in and out of Ibrox in the last few weeks.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad has been bolstered by the arrivals of Antonio Colak, Malik Tillman, Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence, John Souttar, Ridvan Yilmaz, and Ben Davies.

He has also lost two key players as Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey both left on permanent deals, whilst centre-back Leon Balogun was released at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

However, their business may not be over yet as Nottingham Forest have been linked with a swoop to sign Finland international Glen Kamara in the coming weeks.

90min journalist Graeme Bailey recently claimed that a number of clubs are keen on the £21k-per-week gem, Tweeting: “Serie A side Salernitana join Glen Kamara chase. Galatasaray ready to bid again whilst Marseille are also looking at this situation. Also Premier League clubs, including Nottingham Forest, who have checked on him.”

His exit would leave the Gers a body light in the middle of the park and the club could replace him with Tottenham metronome Harry Winks, who has been touted with a move to Rangers this summer.

The Englishman is expected to move on from Spurs before the end of the window and Ross Wilson must now reignite the interest in him to bring the gem to Ibrox in order to axe Kamara from the squad.

Signing Winks would allow the club to cash in on the former Arsenal man without worrying about how it would affect their midfield options or scrambling about to find a replacement near deadline day.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson previously lauded the talent, saying:

“For me, I think Harry Winks is one of the best of the bunch. He dominates the game, defensively and offensively he offers you both and his ball retention, the stats speak for themselves.

“A fit Harry Winks is an important selection for England.”

The midfielder is a similar player to Kamara in the sense that they are both central players who excel at retaining possession and have the quality to create chances for their teammates.

In the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, Winks completed 88% of his attempted passes and created three ‘big chances’ in nine starts. He also made 1.6 tackles and interceptions per game, which shows that he does not shy away from the defensive side of the game.

Meanwhile, Kamara – in the Premiership – created 1.3 chances per game – failing to create any ‘big chances’ – and completed 91% of his passes. Along with that, he also made 1.7 tackles and interceptions per match.

These statistics suggest that they have similar play styles and that Winks has the potential to create a higher quality of chances in the final third, whilst offering similar quality in his passing and defending.

Therefore, signing the Spurs man could improve the team whilst allowing the club to green light an exit for Kamara as interest mounts over his services.
