The good relationship between Mick Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel is no secret. They have been getting on well for many years. In fact, Vettel and Mick”s father Michael were very close too.
The German driver was one of the most welcoming to Mick when he joined Formula 1. Perhaps that’s why he wanted the youngster to make a quality leap and take his place at Aston Martin.
Vettel’s bet was Schumacher, not Alonso
Last Thursday, Vettel announced that he was retiring to spend time with his family. So, his seat was vacant for a few days and he suggested that Aston Martin should get Schumacher to replace him. However, they already had Alonso in mind.
“I have my opinion,” Vettel told Auto Motor und Sport.
“I think very highly of Mick. I’m not entirely objective because I’m very close to him. But I do think he’s a great driver and he’s a learner.
“He keeps learning when others stagnate or stop progressing. He has qualities, but he’s also still very young, he doesn’t have a lot of experience.”
Mick Schumacher’s uncertain future
In the event Schumacher does not continue at Haas next year, his options are quite reduced, given the current state of the grid and the confirmed seats.
In addition, according to the aforementioned media, Aston Martin may have urged Vettel to make a decision on his future. As reported by Tobias Gruner of AMuS, Aston Martin had a Plan B in mind.
“Negotiations between the team and the driver [Alonso] have apparently been taking place in the past few weeks,” Gruner said.
“That’s why Aston Martin recently approached Vettel to ask him to make a decision on his future before the summer break.”
Alonso‘s move to Aston Martin was finally sealed and made public on Monday, taking many in the F1 world by surprise.
