After a troubling campaign in the Premier League last season there is no doubt that Everton were in desperate need of finding solutions to make sure they do not suffer a similar fate or worse; relegation in the upcoming season.
So far the powers at Goodison Park have struck up three deals with James Tarkowski, Dwight McNeil and Ruben Vinagre joining to bolster the team when they return to action this week, however, Richarlison’s move to Tottenham Hotspur has left the side without last season’s top goal scorer which has given the club more work to do.
Replacing the Brazilian forward’s goal contributions is essential for the Toffees to thrive and compete to preserve their top-flight status, with Richarlison delivering a goal contribution every 185 minutes over his tenure at the club, with only Dominic Calvert-Lewin beating that with a goal contribution every 162 minutes.
Calvert-Lewin’s long-term injury last season only heightened the desperation to acquire signings that can add reliable, quality depth to the forward line as the effect of the striker’s absence in front of goal contributed to Everton’s plight.
The Merseyside club have been linked with a move for Maxwel Cornet this summer, with Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth confirming Everton are in talks for the player who possesses a £17.5m release clause.
Cornet could be a fantastic replacement for Richarlison as like the former Everton forward, the Burnley star offers the versatility to play in multiple positions.
Richarlison has been effectively deployed to cover the centre-forward, left wing and right wing positions, something the 24-year-old can also provide as well as the ability to play left midfield and left-back which could be a valuable asset for Frank Lampard over this season.
Not only can Cornet provide the versatility lost following the exit of the Brazil international, but over last season, he proved that he could also replace his impact in the team too.
According to FBref, despite Richarlison outperforming Cornet for goal contributions (15), the Ivorian attacker outperformed his position peer in shots on target accuracy (47.8%), pass completion (67.1%) and was more successful in completing pressures (27.2%).
Can Cornet replace Richarlison?
The Ivorian gem scored nine goals and contributed one assist, finishing up his first season at Turf Moor as the top goal scorer. Therefore, if Lampard could create an attacking partnership with Calvert-Lewin over this season, it could not only boost his goal contributions but could even improve upon Richarlison’s efforts in the team.
With that being said, the signing of Cornet would be a sizable coup for the club and it could give Lampard the opportunity to deploy an efficient attacking threat that could make the Goodison Park faithful forget all about Richarlison’s exit.
